Brett R. Casna, DVM
Dr. Casna is a New Hampshire native. He worked as a veterinary technician while earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Keene State College in Southwest New Hampshire. He then attended Virginia Tech for veterinary school. With initial aspirations of becoming a zoo vet, Dr. Casna was awarded a coveted externship position at the San Diego Zoo. During his time at the zoo, he had the opportunity to treat many amazing animals, but most memorably he assisted small animal surgeons to perform life-saving surgery on a snow leopard. It was during this experience that his passion for surgery blossomed. Dr. Casna has completed 5 years of rigorous post-doctoral training to become a small animal surgeon, including a one-year rotating internship in small animal surgery and medicine in North Carolina, followed by a one-year surgical internship and three-year surgical residency in Maryland. Throughout his training, Dr. Casna’s fascination with orthopedic surgery continued to grow. In addition to the comprehensive residency training, Dr. Casna has undergone additional advanced training in total hip replacement, arthroscopy, minimally invasive fracture management, and correction of angular limb deformities. Dr. Casna has received numerous prestigious honors in the field of small animal orthopedic surgery including the 2022 Mark S. Bloomberg Resident Research Award presented by the Veterinary Orthopedic Society. His professional interests include all things orthopedics, but he is particularly interested in joint replacement surgery, the challenges of canine and feline forelimb lameness, and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Casna is an avid outdoorsman. During his time away from work you’ll find him on a trail with his beautiful wife and daughter and their handsome Great Dane, Conrad; drifting flies on the river; or spending time on the golf course with friends. He is excited to join the team at Colorado Veterinary Specialty Group and explore all that Colorado has to offer. He is deeply devoted to helping you and your beloved pet through the stresses of surgery as best as he can and making the experience as rewarding and worry-free as possible.
